Good questions
Questions parents often ask
Can’t see your question here? Just ask. I’m always happy to talk things through.
Are you a qualified teacher?
Yes. I'm a qualified primary school teacher and I've taught in primary classrooms for five years. I'm still teaching now, so I know what children are learning in school at the moment.
Are you DBS checked?
Yes, I'm fully DBS checked. I'm happy to talk about this when we chat.
What ages do you teach?
Primary school children, roughly aged 5–11. Key Stage 1 is my specialism, so I'm especially at home with children aged about 5–9 who are building the basics of reading, writing and number.
What can you help with?
Reading and phonics, writing and English, and maths. I also support children who are learning English as an additional language, including children who are fairly new to the UK.
Do you teach online or in person?
Both. Online lessons happen over a video call. I travel to families across Reading and the surrounding areas, so lessons can happen at home, where your child feels comfortable. Just tell me roughly where you are.
When are you available?
Usually Monday evenings, from around 5pm; Wednesday evenings, from around 5pm; Thursday evenings, from around 5pm; Sunday times to be arranged. Slots are limited, so get in touch and I’ll let you know what’s free.
How much does tutoring cost?
Lessons are 60 minutes. Online: 4 lessons £130, single lesson £35. In person: 4 lessons £150, single lesson £40. Four lessons is one a week for a month, and regular lessons are how children build up steadily. A single lesson is there if you’d like to try things out first.
What if we need to miss a lesson?
Give me at least 24 hours' notice and we'll rearrange it within your pack. Children get ill without warning, so once per pack I'll also rearrange a short-notice cancellation for sudden illness. The full details are in my terms of business.
How do you keep my child safe?
I'm fully DBS checked, and as a teacher, safeguarding is part of my everyday training and work. I bring the same care and professional standards to tutoring. Before lessons start, we'll agree together how and where they'll happen, so you're comfortable with everything.
What happens after I get in touch?
I'll get back to you to arrange a quick chat. We'll talk about your child, what they're finding tricky and what you'd like help with. If we both think it's a good fit, we'll book a first lesson, and if that goes well we can agree a regular weekly slot.
Does my child need to be behind to have tutoring?
Not at all. Some families come to me because something isn't clicking, and others just want regular one-to-one time with a teacher to keep their child confident and enjoying learning.
Have a question that isn’t here?
Send me a message about your child and what you’d like help with. We’ll have a quick chat, with no commitment, and you can decide from there.
